Sunday Morning Programs
The year 2010 was a challenging one for the Sunday school program at V APC. As the construction project
proceeded, the amount of available useable space decreased week by week. Most ofthe sessions following
Easter were in a One Room Sunday School format for grades 1 through 8. The Sr. High Class, grades 9
through 12, continued to meet on their own as often as possible depending on space and leadership. The Sr.
High Class completed their spring program with a 6 week series entitled "The Six Most Important Decisions
You'll Ever Make".
The Young Children and Worship Program for children ages 3 to 5 was able to continue until June of2010.
This program focuses on a storytelling format and multi-sensory materials to present biblical stories and
parables.
The year's Sunday School offerings were donated to relief efforts overseas, especially for Haiti following the
disastrous earthquake in January 2010.
Special Events
In June, on Celebration Sunday, all the children and youth in attendance received a beautiful sunflower to
plant at home as a reminder of our growth and God's light and love for us. As well, three youth became
members of the church, following a seven week youth mentorship course.
At the end of June, a group of young singers accompanied by a 4-piece band, and the Jam Band put on a
Canadian Concert and Carnival in recognition and celebration of Canada Day, July 1 st. The concert was held
in the parking lot at V APC with weather cooperating.
The Christmas play "The Not So Silent Night" was presented on Sunday, December 12th and attended by over
180 people including visitors from the community. This courtroom type drama was augmented by an original
introduction entitled "Holmes on the Hillside" written by Gord Wytsma. The production directly involved
about 40 people in the congregation.
The Jam Session group continued under the conductorship of Charles Swaney, involving musicians from the
congregation and the broader community. The band performed at the Canadian Concert and in after worship
mini concerts.
Adult education opportunities included a 12 week program entitled "Living the Questions" with leadership
shared among St. Martin's Anglican, Knox Presbyterian and Varsity Acres Presbyterian Churches. Rev. Bob
Smith also led a series of discussions called "Rejoice; Reflections on Advent Hymns" during the Season of
Advent 2010.
