PRESBYTERIAN WORLD SERVICE AND DEVELOPMENT (PWS&D)
Natural disasters around the world have given high profile to the relief work of PWS&D again this year. It is reassuring to have the
Government of Canada match our donations for relief in major catastrophes and to know PWS&D directs our contributions to ecumenical
partners "on the ground" in these regions so the money is working quickly where it is most needed. VAPC members contributed
$10,140 toward PWS&D relief campaigns this year.
PWS&D has other ongoing programs which are not so well publicized. These are supported by nondesignated donations to PWS&D and VAPC
contributed $4104.40 toward this general fund in 2010. Included in this ongoing work are the many programs ofthe development arm of
PWS&D and refugee sponsorship coordination. VAPC members had "first hand" opportunities to learn about both of those in
November. First was the VAPC Echo Speaker series presentation on Afghanistan and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank with Nejabat Khan.
Ken Kim, Director of PWS&D, was in attendance and inspired everyone with his enthusiasm and experience. Then, PWS&D extended the
invitation to those interested to participate in the Fall Consultation of the Canadian Council for Refugees held in Calgary. Carolyn
Vanderlip, PWS&D Refugee Program Coordinator, and the Rev. Dr. Glynis Williams, Director of Action Montreal Refugies, were in Calgary
for the Consultation and offered to do a special presentation about refugee work for us. Centennial Presbyterian hosted this informative
lunchtime event and VAPC was well represented among the participants.
