PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN (WMS)
The purpose of the Women's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church in Canada is "to encourage one another and all the people of the church to be involved in local and world mission through prayer, study, service and fellowship", and we strive faithfully to follow this mandate. Our members are aging and we would love to attract more people (men and women) to experience the sense of mission which we enjoy in this group. Throughout the construction process we moved our meetings to a variety of places, and we were indebted to the ladies of the St Giles group who accommodated us twice during the year.
We participated in the annual World Day of Prayer, and we led the annual Mission Awareness service. We were also privileged to have Erik McRitchie (Norma and Len's grandson) come to talk to us about his exciting mission trip to Cameroon. The Rev. D. Dorcas Gordon, Principal of Knox College, and Lisa Watson of the programming department graced us with a high energy review of the work at Knox College.
In support of the Fellowship of the Least Coin venture we are thankful to the congregation for their penny contributions to the "bear" jar.
Nursing Home visitation remains an important service to seniors, as does the Friendship and Service cards to those in need of support. Glad Tidings, the national mission magazine, is a source of inspiration to us, and there is always a current copy outside the office for anyone to read. New subscriptions at $12/year would be welcome. There is also a large print copy for those who need it.
At the time of writing we are eagerly anticipating the beginning of the new study "Staying Rooted in an uprooted World" about migrants and refugees to which we have invited other participants. This will run the third Wednesday evening a month from January to May. Another exciting venture is the National Presbyterian Women's Gathering 2011 to be held in Toronto from May 20-23. Five hundred women from all over the world are expected to attend and the keynote speaker is Dr. Margaret Somerville from McGill University.
We lost a very dear friend and tireless mission worker when Margaret Williams died in May of 2010. Margaret held many positions at the Presbyterial level and Synodical level for many years, and was well know throughout the country for her compassionate interest in the lives and work of the missionaries. She is already sadly missed.
As always, you would be made most welcome should you be interested in learning about social issues through our missionaries at home and abroad.
