Adult Educational Opportunities
At Varsity Acres we see our growth in understanding the faith as something that extends far beyond our Sunday school days, and in fact is a
lifelong journey. Our opportunities for adult learning help us explore what it is to be a follower of Jesus in our modern context.
Our aim in adult education is not to tell you what to think but to ask questions and to explore issues together from the perspective of faith.
Ultimately it is up to you as a participant to think for yourself in an atmosphere of open and respectful discussion.
Our topics are wide and varied, exploring anything that touches on what it is to be a faithful Christian in the world today. We can approach
that through studying the Bible, reading through and discussing other written resources together, exploring the history of the church, or
tackling modem ethical issues together.
All we ask that you bring is a hunger to know more, a willingness to engage in a lively discussion, and a desire to be part of a group that
explores issues of faith in our day with an open mind.
Our Historic Faith
Countless pilgrims before have made this journey of learning before us. It is helpful to look at how they approached faithfulness in their
own time, as one voice in the conversation of what it means now for us.
We are a church of the Reformation and are still true to the principles that drove that movement. It is a solid heritage for us and can still
inspire us as we listen for God's voice in our own time.
A Living Faith
In the end the goal is to come to an understanding of God, the Bible, the Church and culture that helps us to live authentically the prophet
Micah's call to "do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God".
Other Writings
Our discussions can extend beyond the Bible and use the writings of people of faith ancient and modern who have left for us a record of their
thinking. They can stretch us, make us struggle or squirm, and even help us grow in our own faith as we use the record of their journeys or the
ideas that formed them to help us to connect with God in a new way.
Faith Seeking Understanding
Our goal is to develop a deep, abiding faith through reflection and discussion. Come join with us in a journey of learning that never grows old.
Opening the Bible
The Bible is our first and most important resource in adult learning in the church. We come at this through a variety of ways - looking at a
Biblical book or theme, trying to get to know Biblical characters, or following a theme through the Bible.
Don't worry if your knowledge of the Bible is limited or even non-existent. The story of God's involvement in the lives of Biblical people is
something that is alive, and which can become our own story as we study it.
Growing Together
One of the best ways to grow into a vital faith is to explore it together with others in a spirit of openness and discovery. It is a sacred
conversation which helps us to grow in our understanding of the faith and in our discipleship under Christ.
A Part of the Conversation
Consider this an open invitation to be part of this conversation. We are always open to new topics for our discussion, so let us know what's
on your mind and join us so that we can make this journey of learning together.
